CarsXE is a B2B vehicle data API used by companies like NerdWallet, ServiceUp, and Smartcar to power VIN decoding, license plate lookup, market values, recalls, specs, and vehicle history. We’re bootstrapped, SOC 2 Type II certified, and growing fast in the automotive finance and insurance space.
Our customers build real products on top of our data. That means our backend has to be fast, accurate, and dependable — every endpoint, every call. When our API degrades, our customers’ products break. That standard shapes how we build.
The Role
We’re hiring a senior engineer to own the systems that turn messy, scattered vehicle data into a clean, fast API our customers love. That’s the full path: ingesting and scraping data from many sources, processing and validating it, storing it for both analytics and sub-second serving, and exposing it through an API that’s a genuine pleasure to build against.
This is a high-ownership role. You’ll make architecture decisions, not just implement tickets.
What You’ll Do
Design and maintain resilient scrapers and ingestion pipelines across many vehicle data sources — including detecting when an upstream source silently changes before bad data reaches customers
Build idempotent, re-runnable data pipelines with validation and quality gates baked in
Design storage for two very different jobs: large-scale analytics and low-latency API reads
Improve API performance, reliability, and developer experience — latency, error handling, versioning, uptime
Own systems in production: monitoring, alerting, incident response, and the fixes that prevent the same incident twice
What We’re Looking For
7+ years of backend software engineering experience shipping and owning production systems
Hands-on experience building and maintaining web scrapers or data ingestion at scale — systems you kept alive over time, not one-off scripts
Strong data engineering fundamentals: ETL and pipeline design, data modeling, deduplication and idempotency, and handling dirty, drifting upstream data
Experience designing storage for different access patterns (e.g., a warehouse for analytics alongside a fast serving or cache layer)
You’ve designed or significantly shaped a customer-facing API, and you have concrete opinions about what makes one good
Comfort with cloud infrastructure — we run on GCP (BigQuery, Firestore, Cloud Storage, Firebase)
Bonus Points
Automotive, vehicle data, or finance/insurance (F&I) domain experience
Experience with workflow orchestration (we use n8n)
Background at an API-first or developer-tools company
